3rd
Quarter Exempt Meeting
July
19, 2008
The July meeting of the Milltown Exempt Firemen’s Association
was called to order at 7:15 PM by President Fama. He then
announced the exits and led the men in a salute to the flag.
Roll call of life members was taken
and previous minutes were read and accepted.
Reports of Various Committees:
Fund Raising: 50/50’s being sold by Dan
Knoll
Newsletter: No Report
Trustees: No Report
Guests in attendance were Joe Pawlak,
George Heflich and Carl Christensen.
Joe Pawlak reported that a meeting held
earlier in the day in Byram Twsp. went well. The convention
will be held on Saturday August 30 in Montvale. There are
concerns that high gas prices will affect attendance this year.
All are urged to carpool. Minutes from last year’s convention
are on the website. Milltown was thanked for its turnout at
last year’s convention. It was reported that all local
delegates will be seated.
George Heflich reported that three
firefighters in Secaucus have caused the town 4.8 million
dollars for harassing gays that live next to the firehouse.
Carl Christensen reported that a fact
finding committee is in place for a possibility of regionalizing
fire departments within a township with multiple fire districts
and also going after smaller towns to merge with larger towns.
Carl urged all to keep what we have.
Chiefs Talk: Chief Bush welcomed all and
said to get Wildwood money in ASAP. Deputy Chief Dekovics
said we should collect all unpaid dues.
Proposition and election of Candidates
for Membership:
Scott Janssens was nominated by Brian
Harto and seconded by Anthony Fama, all in favor.
Unfinished Business: Anthony Fama said
he would hold off buying a new briefcase for the office of
President. He was told by the membership and move forward.
New Business: President Fama motioned to
tip Sayreville Fish Market, it was seconded and all in
favor.
Collection of dues took place and a
moment of silence was held for our departed members.
Meeting
adjourned at 7:50pm.

2009 MFD Banquet Review
The 2009 Banquet was held for the second year in a row at the
American Legion Post # 25 in Milltown on February 21, 2009.
Catering was provided by Camelot
Caterers, and as always the food was delicious and plentiful.
Several of Milltown’s mutual aid companies attended, including
North Brunswick, East Brunswick Independent, Brookview, and
Iselin District #11. Other invited guests included Mayor Gloria
Bradford, Councilpersons Stacey Waters, John Collins, and Ronald
Dixon.
As has been the norm for the past few
years, a live band kept the festivities upbeat and fun. A
special thanks to “Les Chaos” for another wonderful performance.
Our Annual Awards Ceremony included the
presentation of an Ex-Chief badge and helmet to outgoing Chief
Brian Bush, along with various years of service awards.
Congratulations to Tom Dougherty, Sr. for 25 years of service,
Jim Riley Jr. and Steven Bailey for 20 years, and Chris Riley
for 15 years.
Finally, a
special note of thanks to the committee members who organized
this year’s banquet. Another job well done!
New
Firehouse Update
Slow but steady progress
continues to be made in the Department’s efforts to build a new
firehouse. The deadline for submissions of “request for
qualifications” from interested architects has passed.
A committee consisting of members of the New Firehouse Committee
and Borough Council has been reviewing the submittals, compiling
a smaller list of applicants who meet key criteria established
by the Committee and the Borough Engineer.
The next step is to submit the names to the Borough Council for
further exploration.

Fundraising Continues
Fundraising efforts continue within the Department; here are a
few highlights:
March 1st
brought another Breweriana collectible Show to Milltown, where
the Department operated the kitchen and oversaw hall usage. A
solid showing for the show made the efforts more profitable than
anticipated.
On March
14, 2009 we held our annual St Paddy’s Day Dinner
Fundraiser. Although turnout was below last year’s record number
(160 people), we turned a higher profit due to less food waste
and being better shoppers!
Upcoming events include an Easter Flower Sale that will benefit
the Exempt Association and the Department. It will be held on
April 3, 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11th. Help from any Exempt
member would be greatly appreciated. Please contact any member
of the Department if you can assist with this fundraiser.
