MILLTOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT

  9-11-01   Never Forget

  Lieutenant Charles Garbarini

In Memory

10-07-01

Hundreds of firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians and bagpipers formed a procession in Pleasantville, NY to honor New York City firefighter Charles Garbarini.

Garbarini, a lieutenant with Engine Company 23 in NYC, was honored by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Govenor George Pataki.

Garbarini loved his life as a firefighter. In his infinite good humor, he had business cards printed; beneath his name was the motto, "You light 'em, We fight 'em"

One of nine siblings, Garbarini was remembered for his deep love of his wife, Andrea. They had two sons, Philip and Dylan, with whom he spent virtually every off-duty hour.

"Charley died fulfilled. He found happiness in his life and himself," said sister Janet Garbarini-Arbuiso.

Older sister Beryl Zawatsky said she likes to think he had an express trip directly to heaven, "and went up fast and furious."

Firefighters Take To The Streets

10-11-01

The family of a New York City firefighter who died during the initial rescue efforts at the World Trade Center Sept. 11 will soon be receiving a check for $5,000 from borough firefighters.

Last Saturday, local firefighters solicited in the streets and held a car wash to collect funds for Lt. Charles Garbarini’s wife, Andrea, and his two sons, Philip, 3, and Dylan, 5.

"We were looking at the different kinds of fund-raisers going on," volunteer fireman Lt. Julius Dekovics III said. "When we came up with the idea to support a family [of a victim], I contacted a former Milltown resident, and he chose his friend and comrade Lt. Charles Garbarini."

Gerard Sillcocks, or "Cookie" as he is known by borough residents, moved to New York and became a member of the city’s fire department, Dekovics explained. Dekovics said that Sillcocks worked with Garbarini, who is still listed as missing and presumed dead. A memorial service was held for him Saturday in Pleasantville, N.Y., where he lived. Garbarini was 43.

Dekovics said that he and his colleagues were not daunted by the heavy rain Saturday morning, and when the car wash couldn’t continue, firefighters found an innovative way to collect donations.

"At about 9:30 a.m., the rain was coming down hard. When the car wash went south, we were determined to get dollars for this family, so we used our boots to collect donations," Dekovics said.

Throughout the day firefighters used their boots as collection bins.

"People were extremely generous," Dekovics said. He and Sillcocks plan to visit Garbarini’s widow in Pleasantville next week to give her a check for $5,000, the total amount collected during the car wash and boot fund-raiser.

"People were pulling over [Saturday] and saying ‘God bless you,’ and ‘thank you.’ It’s been an incredible response from people," Dekovics said.

Borough firefighters will continue to raise money for the Garbarini family, who have been made honorary members of the borough’s fire department.

Donations can be made c/o the Milltown Fire Department and mailed to Borough Hall, 39 Washington Ave., Milltown, NJ 08850.

"3rd Annual Charles Garbarini Golf Outing"

The family has received the financial support they have been waiting for.  After speaking with Andrea she has informed the MFD that she is setting up a charity fund in Charlie’s name in which all monies she gets from now on will go into.  She has expressed her deep appreciation for the on going support from the MFD.  Again this year Andrea will attend and play at the outing.

  Thank You

Grateful for Donations

10-18-01

The members of the Milltown Fire Department would like to thank everyone who donated to our collection and participated in our car wash to benefit the family of Lt. Charles Garbarini of the New York City Fire Department.

Charles, who has been missing since the tragedy on Sept. 11, leaves behind his wife, Andrea, and sons Philip, 3, and Dylan, 5. The Milltown Fire Department has decided to adopt this family as part of our family and will continue to support them in any way we can.

This initial donation will be the first of many to come. Anyone interested in donating to the cause may drop off contributions at the Main Street firehouse.
